Bhatkal, June 2, 2025: Welfare Hospital Bhatkal marked a significant milestone today with the grand inauguration of its new Orthopaedic Department, a long-cherished dream for the community. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was gracefully performed by Mr. Qadir Meeran Patel, General Secretary of the Welfare Society, which oversees numerous institutions in the region. The event welcomed Dr. Hannan Sheik Kabir, a distinguished Consultant Orthopaedist and Joint Replacement Surgeon, to lead the department with his extensive expertise.

Dr. Hannan Sheik Kabir, an MBBS, D’Ortho, DNB (Ortho), MNAMS, FAGE, with a Diploma in Football Medicine (FIFA) and Fellowship in Joint Replacement, brings a wealth of experience to Welfare Hospital. Previously, he served as a surgeon at Highland Hospital, Mangalore, a renowned center for orthopaedic care. His arrival fills a critical gap in Bhatkal’s healthcare landscape, addressing the rising demand for specialized orthopaedic services.

The ceremony was graced by several notable figures, including Dr. Zaheer Kola, Medical Director and Senior Dentist at Welfare Hospital, who warmly welcomed the gathering. In his address, Dr. Kola expressed his delight at the launch, stating, “It has been our dream for many years to find a dedicated doctor who can serve the community full-time. We are pleased to introduce Dr. Hannan, who will be available round-the-clock, alongside our full-time physician, Dr. Sohan Mukodi. At Welfare Hospital, we aim to serve the community with affordable, high-quality care.” He also extended gratitude to senior doctors present, including Dr. Savita Kamat, Taluk Health Officer of Bhatkal, and Dr. Hussain (Ortho), for their support.

Dr. Savita Kamat shared her heartfelt joy at the occasion, noting the pressing need for an orthopaedician in Bhatkal. “Everywhere I went, the most common question was, ‘When will an orthopaedician come to the government hospital?’ Due to technical reasons, we couldn’t fulfill this at the Taluk Hospital, but the demand—especially with trauma cases—is immense. I sincerely wish Dr. Hannan becomes one among the Bhatkallys. We are a hospitable community, and we will always be there to support him,” she said, extending her best wishes.

Dr. Sohan Mukodi, the hospital’s full-time physician, echoed the sentiment, welcoming Dr. Hannan and emphasizing how his presence addresses the long-standing absence of an orthopaedician in the region. Mr. Qadir Meeran Patel added, “Today is our happiest day. Having an orthopaedic doctor was a long-standing dream, and we are committed to supporting Dr. Hannan in every way possible. This is a golden opportunity for the public to benefit from his expertise.”

In his address, Dr. Hannan expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, sharing, “This is a memorable moment for me. I was supposed to join two months ago, but due to personal reasons, I couldn’t. Now, I’m honored to be part of the Welfare family. We will provide comprehensive care—from basic fracture management to advanced treatments like knee and hip replacements. With many sports academies in Bhatkal, we’ll also focus on sports injury management. Our goal is patient care, and we’ll be available 24/7, taking baby steps to make this hospital a more advanced facility by next year.”

The event saw the presence of esteemed members of the medical community, including Dr. Noorul Ameen Musba, Senior Gynaecologist, Dr. Aliya Nazneen, Senior Pediatrician and Neonatologist and Dr. Abu Usama, Resident Medical Officer from Welfare Hospital. Staff, members, and directors of other hospitals also attended, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the occasion. The ceremony concluded with heartfelt duas led by Moulana Syed Zubair, leaving the audience inspired and hopeful for the future of healthcare in Bhatkal.
