Udupi, August 12, 2025: Milagres College, Kallianpur, celebrated National Librarian’s Day on Tuesday, organized by its Library and Information Center and NSS Units at the Audio Visual Hall. The event, attended by students and faculty, featured Retired Professor of History, Prof. Dr. Jayaram Shettigar, as the chief guest, with Ms. Thanisha, a second-year B.Com student, delivering the welcome address.

Prof. Shettigar emphasized the transformative power of books, citing the inspiring example of a 12-year-old girl who established a library in a cancer hospital. He urged students to carry books instead of mobile phones, sharing personal anecdotes about how reading shaped his personality and worldview.

In his presidential address, Principal Dr. Vincent Alva reflected on the shift in student habits, recalling his college days when handwritten notes and reference books were essential for exam preparation. He contrasted this with the current reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT and expressed concern over declining library visits due to mobile phone usage. Dr. Alva encouraged students to frequent the library to engage with books and newspapers for holistic development.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Asthik, a second-year B.Com student, who also served as the anchor. The event highlighted the enduring importance of libraries and reading in fostering personal growth and intellectual development.
