  • Pulwama attack mastermind Abdul Rasheed Ghazi killed by security forces in Kashmir

    A big breakthrough

In a big breakthrough, security forces on Monday gunned down top Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) commander Abdul Rasheed Ghazi alias Kamran, in a 12-hour-long encounter with multiple JeM terrorists in Pulwama area.

Ghazi was a Pakistani national and the brain behind the Pulwama attack.

TOI had reported on Sunday that Ghazi may still be in the Valley.

    Brain behind Pulwama attack

In fact, Ghazi had a narrow escape during an encounter which took place days before the vehicle-borne IED attack on CRPF convoy last Thursday. A local terrorist was killed and a soldier was martyred in that encounter.

Ghazi, who was an Afghan war veteran and an IED specialist, was the one who trained Adil Dar, the terrorist from Pulwama who drove the explosive laden vehicle into the CRPF convoy.
    Close aide of Masood Azhar

On January 3, TOI was the first to report about the top Jaish commander having crossed the border on December 9 and hiding in Pulwama. The security forces had intensified the manhunt for him since the attack.

Ghazi was one of the closest and most trusted aide of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar.
Trained in warfare techniques and IED

He was believed to be in his mid thirties and joined Jaish more than a decade ago. He had been trained in warfare techniques and IED preparation by the Taliban and was known to be one of the finest hands of Jaish.
Seeking revenge for Azhar’s dead nephew

Masood Azhar had already been seething for revenge after the death of his first nephew Talha Rasheed who was killed in 2017.

It is believed that Azhar sent Ghazi and two other top commanders to the Valley in the first week of December who then began to give final shape of a deadly plan which was to be executed around February 9, the death anniversary of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru.

  • Sabarimala Temple : Shrine Reopens After "Purification Process"

    Thiruvananthapuram:

A video shows the two women entering shrine, escorted by police
Women reached the temple at around 3:45 am, left after praying: sources
Women below 50 couldn’t enter temple until today, despite top court order

Two women below 50 walked into the Sabarimala temple in Kerala before daybreak on Wednesday, becoming the first to do so since the Supreme Court ordered the end of a decades-old ban on women of menstrual age entering the shrine. The temple shut down for ritual “purification” for one-and-a half hours before reopening to devotees.
Bindu and Kanaka Durga, both in their early 40s, entered the hilltop shrine early this morning
around 3.45 am. A video accessed by NDTV shows the women hurrying into the shrine, dressed in all-black and escorted by the police. A group of protesters also appear to be at the spot.

Confirming their visit, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said: “It is a fact that the women entered the shrine. Police are bound to offer protection to anyone wanting to worship at the shrine.”

The women started the uphill trek to the temple around midnight, reached a little before 4 am and left after praying to Lord Ayyappa. There was no media glare and very few devotees were around at the time, which apparently facilitated the “sneak” visit.

The two women were protected by a small group of policemen.

“We did not enter the shrine by climbing the 18 holy steps but went through the staff gate,” one of the women told local media, according to AFP.

The women were protected by small group of policemen, both in uniform and plainclothes.

“I don’t think it is true…They might have done that in absolute secrecy. Once we know, we will take appropriate action,” said Rahul Easwar, activist and leader of the Ayyappa Dharma Sena.

Bindu, 44, is a college lecturer and CPI(ML) activist, according to the Press Trust of India. Kanakadurga, 42, is a civil supplies employee who had come to Sabarimala on December 24 after 11 women activists of a Chennai-based outfit trying to reach the shrine were chased away by devotees chanting Ayyappa mantras.

Bindu and Kanaka Durga had tried to visit Sabarimala in the last week of December.

Both women had tried to visit Sabarimala in the last week of December, but had been blocked by massive protests. The temple reopened on December 30 for the Makaravilakku festival and there has been a heavy rush of pilgrims since then.

Priests and many devotees strongly believe that the ban on women between 10 and 50 years should stay as the deity Lord Ayyappa is celibate.

In October, devotees clashed with police leading to the arrest of more than 2,000 people.

On Tuesday, there was more trouble when tens of thousands of women formed a human chain across Kerala state to back the demand for women’s access to the temple. The Supreme Court is to start hearing a legal challenge to its ruling on January 22.

  • Karnataka development a victory for democracy: Rajinikanth

A day after BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa stepped down as Karnataka Chief Minister without facing a floor test in the Assembly, actor Rajinikanth on Sunday said the development in the neighbouring state was a victory for democracy.

“According to the Constitution, majority should be proved in the assembly, the Congress-JD(S) is going to do it, and I see this as a victory for democracy,” he told reporters in reply to a question on the assembly elections in Karnataka and its outcome.

Dubbing as “farcical” the time of 15 days given by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala to Mr. Yeddyurappa to prove his majority, the Tamil superstar, who is set to enter politics, said that it should not have been done.

“Hats off to the Supreme Court which gave a good ruling,” he said, apparently referring to the apex court asking the BJP to take the floor test to prove its majority in the House on Saturday.

After a meeting with the women’s wing functionaries of Rajini Makkal Mandram (Rajini people’s forum), the actor said the verdict of the Supreme Court on the Cauvery issue should be implemented in letter and spirit.

Asked what he felt the Congress-JD(S) coalition should do on the river water issue as the alliance would assume power shortly, he said, “Whatever the Supreme Court has said must be implemented and it is their (Karnataka’s) duty.”

“It is my humble opinion that it will be good if the control over the dams (in Karnataka) is with the (proposed) Cauvery authority,” he said.

Anticipating “government intervention” in the authority that has been mooted, he said, “Let us see what happens in due course.”

To a query if his frequent meetings with functionaries were as per the plan for the launch of his party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, he said, “It can be said that is the plan… we will be ready.”

There was a huge response from women followers and it made him very happy, he said, adding that “success is sure” for his upcoming political innings since women in large numbers supported him.

The 67-year-old political aspirant said women would be given priority in his party.

To a report which stated that support for him was strong in about 150 constituencies in Tamil Nadu, he said, “If that report is true I am happy.”
