An Elderly Man Was Punched By A Drunk For Not Standing Up During Dangal's National Anthem Scene.
Ever since the Supreme Court issued an order that National Anthem should be played in the movie halls across the country, some ‘patriots’ have taken it on their shoulders to turn moral police and reignite that lost spark of nationalism in the citizens, and they don’t even care about the extent to which they go to make their voices heard.Just in case you are feeling good about this, let us tell you punching an elderly man in the name of nationalism is not something to be proud of and we wouldn’t refrain from saying that it’s really shameful on your part.In Mumbai’s Goregaon area, a 59-year-old man, Amalraj Peter Dasan, was attacked by a drunk for not standing up during the national anthem tune that was being played in one of the scenes in the movie ‘Dangal’. To set things straight, Dasan dutifully stood during the national anthem that played before the beginning of the movie. Ironically, Dasan and his wife were the only ones who stood up during the national anthem as the hall was empty. So is this some sort of a new symbol of patriotism where you aren’t nationalist enough if you don’t rise each time the anthem is played, even if it’s just in a scene? Or does rising during the anthem make you more patriotic, while you can walk out and talk sh*t about the country later? Traumatized by the event, Dasan and his wife requested Mumbai Mirror to appeal to all the actors, producers and the Censor Board, on their behalf and alert the audience if there were any scenes related to the national anthem. The accused has been identified as Shirish Madhukar, a 52-year-old man who has now been booked under the IPC sections 323 and 504. According to an officer from Goregaon Police station, the accused said that he was under the influence of alcohol and “taken over by patriotic zeal that reflected in the movie.” Wow! Recalling the traumatic incident, Dasan said “It was the scene where the protagonist’s daughter wins the gold medal and the national anthem’s tune is being played in the background. Suddenly, a man who was obviously very drunk, started screaming at everyone. He was shouting filthiest of abuses and asking people to stand up.” He further added, “I didn’t realise he was demanding that people rise to the national anthem tune. Before I could react, he landed a punch on my cheek. My wife was horrified as I took a few seconds to recover from the blow. By this time, the movie hall’s security managed to pin him down and the cops took him away.”Agitated over this wrongful questioning of his patriotism by an “overzealous patriot”, Dasan said “I didn’t know the movie’s plot. How was I to know the national anthem would be played in the background in one of the scenes? Today it is me, tomorrow another unsuspecting movie-goer will be assaulted by an overzealous `patriot’.” “Mr Aamir Khan or the Censor Board should put an alert before the scene. We live in the times when people don’t think twice before assaulting anyone, be it women or senior citizens,” Dasan said. Although he does not want his attacker to be punished any further, he did mention that there needs to be a proper mechanism to protect the people and we do agree with him.The Goregaon police said that the investigation would still continue, despite the family willing to forgive Madhukar. Apparently, the Ministry of Home Affairs had issued a circular last year stating that when an anthem in playing in a film, one is not expected to stand, “When in the course of a newsreel or documentary, anthem is played as a part of the film, it is not expected of the audience to stand as standing is bound to interrupt the exhibition of the film and would bring in disorder and confusion rather than add to the dignity of the anthem.” Well guys, we just have one thing to say, your hearts might be brimming with patriotism but that does not give you the power to beat anyone.–TOIPhoto: © BCCL (Main Image) -

Exam malpractice: bill to punish staff, students
The state government is planning to introduce a bill that provides for stringent punishment to public servants and students who indulge in examination malpractice.
The bill envisages punishing government staff with imprisonment up to three years and fine, while students will be debarred from taking examination for six years, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait said at the state-level educational convention of pre-university employees here on Sunday.
The minister said plans were afoot to open a school-cum-college on a single campus in each hobli so that students do not drop out. Such an institution will have class 1 till graduation.
The government has also begun recruiting 1,900 pre-university lecturers. The Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) is also in talks with the Higher Education Department to promote eligible PU lecturers to degree colleges, he added.
Besides, the government is considering setting up a teachers’ welfare fund to provide health insurance to instructors and will pay a part of the premium. Sait further said a Cabinet sub-committee was reviewing the guidelines for sanctioning grants to private educational institutions.

ATM Cash Withdrawal Limit Raised From Rs. 4,500 To Rs. 10,000 A Day, Says Reserve Bank
HIGHLIGHTS
- Cash withdrawal limit increased to Rs. 10,000 per day starting tomorrow
- Weekly withdrawal limit of Rs. 24,000 per bank account remains unchanged
- Weekly withdrawal amount for current accounts doubled to Rs. 1 lakh.
Starting tomorrow, you can pull out 10,000 per day from an ATM, though a weekly limit of 24,000 per bank account remains unchanged.
The RBI has increased the daily limit for ATM withdrawals from Rs. 4,500 which has been in place for a few weeks now.

From current accounts, the amount that can be collected each week has been doubled to a lakh. Limits of access to cash were declared on November 8 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the shock announcement that 500- and 1,000- rupee notes would be illegal just a few hours later.
The demonetisation drive, he said, would check tax evasion, corruption and counterfeiting. A huge cash crunch followed, driving millions of Indians into long lines at banks, and the PM in an emotional speech asked for “just 50 days” till December 30 to resolve problems.
After the new year, the scarcity of notes has eased up, though the opposition has said the government has defaulted on its PM because cash restrictions remain in place and, according to most estimates, virtually all the banned notes have been deposited in banks, meaning that black money has not been destroyed or forced out.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has pointed to improved tax collections to dismiss reports of economic disruption after the notes ban. The shock decision on abolishing high-denomination notes prompted most private economists to slash growth forecasts to 6.3-6.4 per cent for the fiscal year 2016/17 from over 7.5 per cent, citing the impact of the demonetisation, which they said would linger for one more year, but the government has called those concerns unfounded.
The Finance Ministry’s Statistics Office has predicted strong economic growth in the current fiscal year that ends in March. Gross Domestic Product is estimated to expand by an annual 7.1 per cent in the current fiscal year, slower than a provisional growth of 7.6 per cent in 2015/16. But the forecast does not fully take into account the impact of the notes ban. On Friday, Urjit Patel, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has been summoned by a parliamentary committee to explain how the demonetisation decision was taken as also to outline its impact.
In a written answer ahead of his appearance, the central bank has stated that it was the government which “advised” that 500 and 1,000-rupee notes be removed from circulation, which was then cleared by the RBI the next day. The PM announced demonetisation just 24 hours after that.
The RBI has been criticised for following the government’s lead on a landmark decision on currency and for taking a backseat in the days that followed, with Mr Patel missing from briefings that made important announcements on issues like cash limits. -
