  • Byndoor: Kapu Police Arrest Garuda Gang Key Accused Absconder After Evading Court for Years

    Byndoor, September 20, 2025 – Kapu police have arrested Mohammed Aasif (35), a key accused in the notorious Garuda gang cases that terrorized Karnataka in 2019-20, who had been absconding and mocking the law by evading court appearances. The arrest took place on Friday in Gauri Kaluve, Chikkamagaluru city, where Aasif, a resident of Muslimkeri, Badakere, Navunda village in Byndoor taluk, Udupi district, was hiding.

    Aasif, son of M. Mohammed Haneef, faces multiple cases across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. In Kapu Police Station Crime No. 107/2020 under IPC Sections 143, 148, 448, 323, 324, 354, 506, 424, 307, and 149, the case (SC No. 18/2020) is pending in the Second Additional District and Sessions Court, Udupi. He has been avoiding court hearings since February 2025.

    Cases are also registered at Gangolli PS (4 cases), Byndoor PS (2 cases), Kankanady PS, Mangalore (2 cases), and Uppinangadi PS (2 cases), all pending trial. An LPC warrant (No. 2/1972) was issued for non-appearance.

    Based on intelligence, Kapu police team—HC 137 Mohammed Rafiq, CPC 1222 Mohan Chandra, and CPC 113 Ganesh Shetty—traveled to Chikkamagaluru on September 18, 2025, and apprehended Aasif. Under the guidance of Assistant SP Dr. Harsha Priyamvada (IPS, Karkala Subdivision), CPI Jayashree S. Mane (Kapu Circle), and PSI Tejaswi T.I. (Kapu PS), he was produced before the Second Additional District and Sessions Judge, Udupi, who remanded him to judicial custody until October 16, 2025. He has been lodged in Hiriyadka Sub-Jail.

    Senior police officials praised the Kapu team’s dedication and selfless service in cracking this long-pending case.

  • Kaup: Pedestrian Killed in Car Accident Near Koppalangadi on NH66

    Kaup, August 24, 2025 – A tragic accident occurred near Koppalangadi on National Highway 66 (NH66) in Kaup at around 3:30 PM on Sunday, August 24, 2025, when a speeding car struck and killed a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. The victim, identified as Peeru Saheb, a 70-year-old resident of Koppalangadi, suffered severe injuries and passed away while being transported to a private hospital in Udupi.

    According to reports, the car was traveling from Mangaluru towards Udupi when it collided with Peeru Saheb, who was standing to cross the highway. The Udupi SDPI ambulance service assisted in rushing the victim to the hospital, but he could not be saved. Kaup police arrived at the scene, conducted an inspection, and registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.

  • Kapu: Renowned DJ Mervin Mendonca Dies in Tragic Car Accident, Three Others Seriously Injured

    Kapu, August 23, 2025 – A tragic car accident in the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025, near Kapu resulted in the death of Mervin Mendonca, a 35-year-old celebrated DJ, cinematographer, and newlywed from Belman. Three other passengers, identified as Prajwal from Ambalpady, Prasad from Karkala, and Vignesh, were seriously injured in the incident.

    The group was traveling from Ambalpady to Belman in a car when a dog reportedly crossed their path on National Highway 66 near Muloor, close to Halli Mane Hotel. The driver, Prajwal, swerved to avoid hitting the animal, causing the vehicle to lose control and overturn. The car was completely wrecked, and Mervin succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The injured were rushed to a private hospital in Udupi by Uchila and Muloor SDPI ambulances, with two of them reported to be in critical condition. Ambulance drivers K.M. Siraj, Hameed, and social worker Jamaluddin Uchila assisted in the rescue efforts.

    Kapu police visited the site and initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. A case is likely to be registered to probe potential factors such as road conditions or speeding. Mervin, a well-known figure in Udupi and Mangaluru, had released a new Konkani music video on YouTube for APD Music just a day earlier, which he had personally directed and filmed. He was also recognized for his cinematography work in several Konkani and Tulu film projects, showcasing his creative talent.

  • Kaup: Vinay Kumar Sorake Launches “Stop Vote Chori” Sticker Campaign

    Kaup, August 18, 2025 – Former minister and Congress leader Vinay Kumar Sorake launched the nationwide “Stop Vote Chori” sticker campaign at Rajiv Bhavan in Kaup, Udupi district, following directives from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and National Youth Congress. The initiative seeks to alert voters to alleged manipulations of the democratic process by the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    Addressing the gathering, Sorake accused the central government of weakening constitutional mechanisms and misusing the Election Commission to secure electoral victories through illicit means. He emphasized that the Indian Constitution, crafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, grants equal voting rights to all citizens, from the President to the poorest individual. However, he claimed the Modi government is exploiting the Election Commission to suppress these rights.     ಉಡುಪಿ, ಜುಲೈ 21, 2025: ಉಡುಪಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಪು ವಿಧಾನಸಭಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಸಮಿತಿಗಳು ಜಂಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಇಂದು ಉಡುಪಿ ತಾಲೂಕು ಕಚೇರಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನಾ ಸಭೆಯನ್ನು ಆಯೋಜಿಸಿದವು. 9/11 ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ, ಅಕ್ರಮ ಸಕ್ರಮ 53 ಮತ್ತು 57 ಅರ್ಜಿ ತಿರಸ್ಕಾರ, ವೃದ್ಧಾಪ್ಯ ವೇತನ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಧ್ಯಾ ಸುರಕ್ಷಾ ರದ್ದತಿ, ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ದರ ಏರಿಕೆಯಂತಹ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಬಿಜೆಪಿ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅಪಪ್ರಚಾರವನ್ನು ಖಂಡಿಸಲು ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ಆಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು.

    ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿ ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿದಾಗ, ಒಬ್ಬ ಯುವಕ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಾಂಜಾ ಸೇವಿಸಿ ಅದರ ಅಮಲಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು ಕಂಡುಬಂದಿತು. ವಿಚಾರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆತ ತನ್ನ ಹೆಸರು ಅನಿಲ್ (23) ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದನು. ಆತನನ್ನು ಠಾಣೆ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಣಿಪಾಲದ ಕೆ.ಎಂ.ಸಿ. ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಫೊರೆನ್ಸಿಕ್ ಮೆಡಿಸಿನ್ ವಿಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಕರೆತರಲಾಯಿತು.

    ದಿನಾಂಕ 07/06/2025ರಂದು ಕೆ.ಎಂ.ಸಿ. ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಫೊರೆನ್ಸಿಕ್ ಮೆಡಿಸಿನ್ ವಿಭಾಗದ ತಜ್ಞರ ವರದಿಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಆರೋಪಿತ ಅನಿಲ್ ಗಾಂಜಾ ಸೇವಿಸಿರುವುದು ದೃಢಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಈ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕಾಪು ಪೊಲೀಸ್ ಠಾಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪರಾಧ ಕ್ರಮಾಂಕ 83/2025, ಕಲಂ 27(b) NDPS ಕಾಯ್ದೆಯಡಿ ಪ್ರಕರಣ ದಾಖಲಾಗಿದೆ.

    ಕಾಪು, ಜೂನ್ 2, 2025: ಸೋಶಿಯಲ್ ಡೆಮಾಕ್ರಟಿಕ್ ಪಾರ್ಟಿ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಕಾಪು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಸಮಿತಿ ವತಿಯಿಂದ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ರಕ್ತ ನಿಧಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ, ಉಡುಪಿ ಇದರ ಸಹಯೋಗದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಜೂರು ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಸಭಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೃಹತ್ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ರಕ್ತದಾನ ಶಿಬಿರವನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಯಿತು.

    ರಕ್ತದಾನಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಂಚೆ ನಡೆದ ಸಭಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆಯನ್ನು ಸೋಶಿಯಲ್ ಡೆಮಾಕ್ರೆಟಿಕ್ ಪಾರ್ಟಿ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಕಾಪು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಸಮಿತಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಸಾಧಿಕ್ ಕೆ ಪಿ ಯವರು ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಮುಖ್ಯ ಅತಿಥಿಯಾಗಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ರಕ್ತ ನಿಧಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಣಾ ವೈದ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ವೀಣಾ ಕುಮಾರಿ ಆಗಮಿಸಿ ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ತದ ತೀವ್ರ ಕೊರತೆ ಇದ್ದು ಸಂಘ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಸ್ವಯಂ ಪ್ರೇರಿತವಾಗಿ ರಕ್ತದಾನ ಶಿಬಿರವನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಮೂಲಕ ರಕ್ತದ ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಗಿಸಲು ಶ್ರಮಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಮನವಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು.

    ಕಾಪು ಮೇ 31, 2025: ಉಡುಪಿ ಹಾಗೂ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ರಕ್ತ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ನಿಧಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೀವ್ರ ರಕ್ತದ ಕೊರತೆ ಇರುವುದನ್ನು ಮನಗಂಡು ಸೋಶಿಯಲ್ ಡೆಮಾಕ್ರಟಿಕ್ ಪಾರ್ಟಿ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಕಾಪು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಸಮಿತಿ ವತಿಯಿಂದ ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ರಕ್ತ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ನಿಧಿಯ ಸಹಯೋಗದೊಂದಿಗೆ ದಿನಾಂಕ 01/06/2025 ರ ಆದಿತ್ಯವಾರ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ 9:00 ಗಂಟೆಯಿಂದ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ 1:30 ರ ವರೆಗೆ ಕಾಪುವಿನ ಮಜೂರ್ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಸಭಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೃಹತ್ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ರಕ್ತದಾನ ಶಿಬಿರವನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

    ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಹಾಗೆ ರಕ್ತದ ಪೂರೈಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು, ಆದರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ತದಾನಿಗಳ ಕೊರತೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಬೇಡಿಕೆಯಷ್ಟು ರಕ್ತ ಪೂರೈಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಿನಂಪ್ರತಿ 40-60 ಯೂನಿಟ್ ರಕ್ತದ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಇದ್ದು ಆದರೆ ರಕ್ತಸಂಗ್ರಹ ನಿಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ರಕ್ತದ ಸಂಗ್ರಹವಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಎಸ್ ಡಿ ಪಿ ಐ ಕಾಪು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಸಮಿತಿ ವತಿಯಿಂದ ನಾಳೆ ರಕ್ತದಾನ ಶಿಬಿರವನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರು ಈ ರಕ್ತದಾನ ಶಿಬಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಮೂಲಕ ರಕ್ತದ ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಗಿಸಲು ಕೈಜೋಡಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಎಸ್ ಡಿ ಪಿ ಐ ಕಾಪು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಸಮಿತಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಸಾದಿಕ್ ಕೆ ಪಿ ಯವರು ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆ ಮೂಲಕ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ

  • Udupi Theft Case: Karnataka High Court Acquits Reshma Hegde

    Bengaluru, May 30, 2025: The Karnataka High Court has acquitted Reshma Hegde in a 2011 theft case from Udupi, overturning the convictions of lower courts. Justice S. Rachaiah delivered the verdict on May 22, 2025, setting aside the earlier judgments that had found her guilty of housebreaking and theft.

    Reshma Hegde (32), a resident of Vinanthi House, Lakshmindra Nagar, Shivalli Village, Udupi, was accused of breaking into a house and stealing gold ornaments weighing approximately 20½ pauns on May 1, 2011, at around 1:30 p.m. The prosecution alleged that Hegde, along with another accused, broke the lock of the complainants’ house while they were away and committed the theft. A case was registered by the Kaup Circle Police under Crime No. 66/2011, charging the accused under Sections 454 (housebreaking) and 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), followed by the submission of a charge sheet.

    The Principal Civil Judge and JMFC, Karkala, convicted Hegde on November 10, 2016, in C.C. No. 437/2011. This judgment was upheld by the Principal Sessions Judge, Udupi, on April 26, 2018, in Criminal Appeal No. 74/2016. Challenging these concurrent findings, Hegde filed a Criminal Revision Petition (No. 704/2018) in the Karnataka High Court.

    During the hearing, Hegde’s counsel, Nishit Kumar Shetty, argued that the lower courts’ findings were flawed. He contended that the recovery of the stolen items, allegedly made under Section 27 of the Indian Evidence Act, was not properly conducted and did not establish Hegde’s exclusive possession. Additionally, he claimed that documents produced by the manager of Bhima Jewellers were fabricated. The prosecution’s case stated that gold ornaments were stolen, but the recovered items were in the form of gold ingots, casting doubt on their identity.

    The State’s counsel, K. Nageshwarappa, defended the lower courts’ rulings, citing the testimonies of prosecution witnesses (PWs 1, 2, 4, and 6) and documents (Exs. P.13 to P.16) from Bhima Jewellers, which indicated that the accused had sold the stolen gold and purchased new ornaments. However, the court noted that the manager of Bhima Jewellers (PW.6) stated the gold was recovered as ingots, not ornaments, raising doubts about the evidence’s reliability.

    Justice S. Rachaiah observed that the testimony of PW.6 lacked credibility and that the recovery of gold ingots was insufficient to prove Hegde’s guilt. The lower courts had erred in evaluating the evidence, leading to an incorrect conviction. Consequently, the High Court allowed the petition, set aside the convictions dated November 10, 2016, and April 26, 2018, and acquitted Hegde of the charges under IPC Sections 454 and 380. Any bail bonds executed were also canceled.
