Inter-state lottery ticket transactions and matka gambling are also prohibited. The public is urged to report any such activities to the nearest police station immediately.   • Bhatkal: Police Arrest Attempted Murder Accused Within 12 Hours

    Bhatkal, August 24, 2025 – Bhatkal Town Police arrested Akbar Ahmed, aged 33, within 12 hours of an attempted murder incident reported on August 24, 2025, at 1:20 PM in a local market. The complainant, Mohammad Haneef, a 38-year-old fruit vendor from Badriya Colony, Taggaragoda Jali, Bhatkal, reported that Akbar, residing near Ismail Welding Garage in Firdosnagar, Bhatkal (originally from Kallakall Oni, Hanagal, Haveri), attacked Ibrahim (Janata Plot, Bhatkal) with a knife. The incident stemmed from a business dispute over fruit boxes, escalating into a heated argument.   • Bhatkal: Three Extortionists Arrested for Using Virtual Numbers to Demand Ransom

    Bhatkal, August 24, 2025 – The Bhatkal City Police in Uttara Kannada District arrested three individuals on August 20, 2025, for extorting a complainant using virtual numbers. The accused, identified as Mohammad Faris (20, Abuhurera Colony, Bhatkal), Mohammad Arshad (22, Musanagar, Bhatkal), and Aman (20, Haladi 76 Janata Colony, Kundapur), were remanded to judicial custody following their arrest.

    The case began when the complainant filed a report at Bhatkal City Police Station at 11:00 AM on August 20, 2025, detailing threats received on August 16, 2025, at 8:35 PM. An unknown caller, using a virtual number, claimed to possess private photos and videos of the complainant’s daughter, demanding ₹20 lakh to prevent their public release. Subsequent calls on August 18 and 19, 2025, from numbers +31 970105***** and +31 97010******, reduced the demand to ₹15 lakh while continuing the threats against the complainant and his wife.   • Sirsi: Youth Dies in Bike Accident Near Marikamba Government High School

    Sirsi, August 23, 2025 – A devastating road accident occurred this afternoon in front of Marikamba Government High School in Sirsi, resulting in the death of a young motorbike rider.   • Uttara Kannada: Linganamakki Reservoir Water Release Scheduled, Red Alert Issued

    Karwar, August 18, 2025 – The Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has announced that excess water will be released from the Linganamakki Reservoir starting at 10:00 AM on August 19, 2025, due to heavy inflows caused by continuous rainfall in the Sharavathi River catchment area. The Indian Meteorological Department and Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre, Bengaluru, have issued a red alert for coastal taluks in Uttara Kannada district until 8:30 AM on August 20, 2025.

    As of 1:00 PM on August 18, the reservoir’s water level reached 1815.50 feet, nearing its maximum capacity of 1819.00 feet, with an inflow exceeding 59,891 cusecs. If the inflow continues at this rate, the reservoir is likely to reach full capacity soon, necessitating the release to ensure dam safety. The Executive Engineer of KPCL, Linganamakki, has urged residents in low-lying areas along the Sharavathi River, particularly in Honnavar taluk, to exercise caution and relocate to relief centers with their valuables.

  • Joida: Farmer Seriously Injured in Bear Attack Near Deria Village in Kali Tiger Reserve

    Joida, August 18, 2025: A distressing incident occurred on Monday morning when a group of three bears attacked a farmer, Shanta Hanumant Dereker, while he was grazing cattle near his farmland in Khumbaye Majire, close to Deria village in the Kumbharwada wildlife range of the Kali Tiger Reserve, Joida taluk, Uttara Kannada district. The attack left Shanta with severe injuries to his face, head, and back, causing widespread panic in the area.

  • Sirsi: Two Arrested for Illegal Cattle Transport, One Suspect Escapes

    Sirsi, August 17, 2025: The Sirsi City Police arrested two individuals involved in the illegal transportation of cattle without proper documentation near the Nileshwar checkpoint in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada district. The suspects, identified as Basavaraj Fakirappa Gollar (38) and Sujatha Basavaraj Gollar (31) from Hangal, Haveri district, were apprehended during a routine vehicle inspection led by PSI Nagappa B. A third suspect, Pandurang Narayan Naik (54), managed to escape, and police operations are underway to locate him.

    During the inspection, the police discovered five cattle—two cows, two female calves, and one male calf—being transported in a Mahindra Bolero pickup vehicle, allegedly for slaughter. The vehicle, valued at approximately ₹3 lakh, and the cattle, worth around ₹19,500, were seized. The operation was conducted under the leadership of PSI Nagappa, with police personnel including Ramayya Poojari, Hanumant Makapur, Channabasappa Kyarakatti, Sunil, Rajshekhar, Hanumant Kabadi, Jyoti Nayak M., and Sudarshan Naik.
