  • U.S. Revokes Visas for Indian Executives and Families Involved in Fentanyl Precursor Trafficking

New Delhi, September 18, 2025 – In a major crackdown on synthetic narcotics trafficking, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi has revoked and denied visas for several Indian business executives and corporate leaders implicated in the illegal trade of fentanyl precursors. This action, part of the Trump Administration’s broader strategy to protect Americans from dangerous drugs, also extends to their close family members, rendering them ineligible for U.S. travel.

The decisions were made under sections 221(i), 212(a)(2)(C), and 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The Embassy is additionally flagging executives linked to companies known for trafficking fentanyl precursors for enhanced scrutiny on future visa applications.

Chargé d’affaires Jorgan Andrews emphasized the U.S. commitment, stating, “The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi remains steadfast in its commitment to combating illicit drug trafficking. Individuals and organizations involved in the illegal production and trafficking of drugs to the United States, along with their families, will face consequences that may include being denied access to the United States.”

Curbing the influx of fentanyl and its precursors is a top priority for the U.S., with gratitude expressed to Indian counterparts for their collaboration in tackling this transnational threat. The Trump Administration has issued Executive Orders to secure borders, dismantle drug cartels, and urge reforms in source countries.

“Together, we will build a safer, healthier, stronger future for America and India,” the release concluded.

  • Vaishali Rameshbabu Makes Chess History: Back-to-Back Champion at FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2025

Samarkand, Uzbekistan, September 16, 2025 – Indian Grandmaster R. Vaishali Rameshbabu has cemented her legacy by winning the FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2025, becoming the first player—male or female—to claim the prestigious title consecutively. Securing 8 out of 11 points, Vaishali clinched victory with a hard-fought draw against former Women’s World Champion GM Tan Zhongyi of China in the final round, edging out Russia’s GM Kateryna Lagno on tiebreaks. The triumph earns her a spot in the 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, positioning her as a frontrunner to challenge for the world title.

The 11-round Swiss-system tournament, held from September 5 to 15 in Samarkand, featured 103 of the world’s top female chess players vying for supremacy and qualification. As the defending champion from the 2023 Riga edition, Vaishali faced intense pressure but started strongly with three consecutive wins. A mid-tournament stumble, including a Round 8 loss to Kazakhstan’s GM Bibisara Assaubayeva, briefly jeopardled doubts. However, the 24-year-old from Chennai showcased resilience, defeating Ukraine’s GM Mariya Muzychuk in Round 10 to regain joint lead.

In the crucial final round, Vaishali, playing Black, employed a Sicilian Defense to hold Tan Zhongyi to a 42-move draw. Lagno’s simultaneous draw against Azerbaijan’s GM Ulviyya Fataliyeva left both players at 8 points, but Vaishali’s better tiebreak—calculated by the average rating of opponents, excluding the lowest-rated—secured her the title. Assaubayeva claimed third place after drawing her final game.

“This win means everything,” Vaishali said at the closing ceremony. “After a tough phase in Chennai with seven straight losses, I nearly withdrew. My brother Praggnanandhaa and family kept me going. With three Indian women—me, Divya Deshmukh, and Koneru Humpy—in the Candidates, 2026 is poised to be a landmark year for Indian chess.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vaishali on X, stating, “Her passion and dedication are exemplary. Best wishes for her future endeavours.” FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich presented her with the winner’s trophy, with her brother Praggnanandhaa, a participant in the open section, by her side.

Vaishali’s qualification strengthens an already formidable Women’s Candidates lineup, alongside Deshmukh and Humpy, following their all-Indian Women’s World Cup final in July. As India’s chess prowess surges, Vaishali’s back-to-back triumphs signal the rise of Indian women in the global arena.

  • UN Inquiry Labels Israel’s Gaza War as Genocide, Holds State and Leaders Accountable

Geneva, September 16, 2025: A United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory has declared Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza a genocide, marking a historic finding after nearly two years of conflict. The report, released on Tuesday, holds the State of Israel and its senior leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and President Isaac Herzog, responsible for actions constituting genocidal intent against Palestinians in Gaza.

Navi Pillay, chairwoman of the commission and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, detailed the findings in an interview with Al Jazeera. “We’ve identified the president, the prime minister, and the former minister of defense based on their statements and the orders they’ve given,” Pillay said. “As agents of the state, under international law, the State of Israel is held responsible for committing genocide.”

The commission’s report, covering the period from October 7, 2023, to July 31, 2025, cites “explicit statements” from Israeli officials, including Netanyahu’s calls for a “holy war of total annihilation” and Gallant’s reference to Palestinians as “human animals,” alongside circumstantial evidence such as mass civilian casualties, deliberate starvation policies, and attacks on healthcare facilities. It identifies four of the five acts prohibited under the 1948 Genocide Convention: killings, causing serious harm, creating life conditions aimed at physical destruction, and preventing births. Over 60,000 Palestinian deaths, including 18,430 children and 9,735 women, and the displacement of 2.3 million residents were documented.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the report as “fake” in a statement on X, accusing the commission of acting as “Hamas proxies” and relying on “Hamas falsehoods.” The ministry called for the commission’s immediate abolition, labeling the findings “distorted and false.” Israel’s UN representative, Daniel Meron, further denounced the report as a “scandalous, fake, and libellous rant.” Israel maintains its actions are lawful self-defense against Hamas, with efforts to minimize civilian harm.

The report recommends an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid, and prosecutions at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Pillay urged global action, warning that delays cost lives and erode international credibility. The findings have ignited debates on X, with hashtags like #GazaGenocide and #StopArmingIsrael trending, while pro-Israel voices criticize the report as biased.

  • Nepal’s First Female Chief Justice Sushila Karki Sworn In as Interim Prime Minister

Kathmandu, September 12, 2025: In a historic milestone, Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, was sworn in as the country’s interim Prime Minister on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the President’s Office. President Ram Chandra Poudel administered the oath, marking Karki as the first woman to lead Nepal’s government. The ceremony, attended by Vice President Ram Sahay Yadav and Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, was broadcast on state television.

“Congratulations! We wish you success, wish the country success,” President Poudel said after the swearing-in. While administering the oath, he announced that House of Representatives elections would be held in six months, signaling a roadmap to restore full democratic functioning amid the transitional government.

Karki’s appointment follows deadly anti-corruption protests led by Gen Z activists, which ousted Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and dissolved parliament. Her selection, endorsed by protesters for her neutrality and anti-corruption stance, ends days of political turmoil.

    Who is Sushila Karki?

Born on June 7, 1952, in Biratnagar, Karki earned a BA from Mahendra Morang Campus in 1972, an MA in political science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1975, and an LLB from Tribhuvan University in 1978. She began her career as an advocate in 1979 and taught at Mahendra Multiple Campus, Dharan, in 1985.

Appointed as an ad-hoc Justice of the Supreme Court in 2009 and made permanent in 2010, Karki became Nepal’s first female Chief Justice on July 11, 2016, recommended by the Constitutional Council under then-PM K.P. Sharma Oli. Her tenure, lasting until June 6, 2017, was marked by landmark judgments, including overturning the appointment of Lokman Singh Karki to the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

Known for her strict anti-corruption stance, Karki faced an impeachment motion in 2017, accused of “biased verdicts” and judicial overreach. The motion failed to secure a two-thirds majority amid public outcry and UN concerns over threats to judicial independence. She retired at 65 but continued advocating for rule of law and governance reforms.

Karki’s neutrality, lack of political affiliation, and judicial legacy made her the protesters’ preferred choice for interim leadership. As interim PM, she is expected to oversee elections and address corruption demands.

  • Nepal’s Gen Z Revolution: Six Dead, Over 80 Injured in Protests Against Social Media Ban and Corruption

Kathmandu, Nepal, September 8, 2025: In a dramatic escalation of public unrest, Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and other major cities were rocked by massive protests led by Generation Z on Monday, September 8, 2025, resulting in six deaths and over 80 injuries. The youth-led demonstrations, dubbed the “Gen Z Revolution,” were sparked by the government’s controversial ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X, and YouTube, and fueled by deep-seated frustrations over systemic corruption, economic inequality, and authoritarian governance.

A Sweeping Social Media Ban Ignites Outrage

The protests stem from a government decision on September 4, 2025, to block unregistered social media platforms that failed to comply with new regulations under the Directive on Regulating the Use of Social Media, 2023. The directive, backed by a Supreme Court ruling, required platforms to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT), establish a local office, appoint a grievance officer, and comply with national laws within a seven-day deadline ending September 3, 2025. The ban, affecting platforms that account for roughly 80% of Nepal’s internet traffic, was justified by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s administration as a measure to ensure accountability, curb cybercrime, and secure tax revenue from foreign tech giants. Critics, however, argue it is a pretext to suppress free speech and control dissent.

Banned Social Media and Communication Platforms in Nepal

The following 26 platforms were banned by the Nepali government on September 4, 2025, for failing to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT):

Note: Hamro Patro has applied for registration, and its status is under review.

Only five platforms—TikTok, Viber, WeTalk, Nimbuzz, and Popo Live—are currently registered and remain operational. Two others, Telegram and Global Diary, are in the registration process and may soon be permitted to operate.

The sudden blackout disrupted communication for millions, particularly affecting the 7.5% of Nepal’s 29 million population living abroad who rely on these platforms to stay connected with families. Small businesses, content creators, and online sellers, many of whom depend on social media for their livelihoods, were also hit hard, prompting widespread anger.

From Online Dissent to Street Clashes

What began as online dissent quickly spilled onto the streets, with tens of thousands of Gen Z protesters—born roughly between 1997 and 2012—mobilizing across Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Dharan, and Ghorahi. The movement, organized by groups like ‘Hami Nepal,’ gained momentum through registered platforms like TikTok and Viber, as well as banned platforms accessed via VPNs and DNS workarounds. Demonstrators, chanting slogans like “We are the movement. We will fight against corruption,” marched toward Nepal’s federal parliament in New Baneshwor, breaching police barricades and occupying a security building before being dispersed.

The protests turned violent as security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and, in some cases, live ammunition. In Kathmandu, clashes near the parliament complex left six protesters dead and over 80 injured, with two journalists among the casualties. In Damak, protesters burned an effigy of Prime Minister Oli and attempted to storm municipal offices, leading to further violence and one demonstrator being critically injured. The Kathmandu District Administration Office imposed a curfew from 12:30 p.m. local time, covering areas around the parliament, as the Nepali Army was deployed to restore order.

    A Broader Fight Against Corruption

While the social media ban was the immediate trigger, protesters emphasized that their grievances extend far beyond digital restrictions. “We were triggered by the social media ban, but that is not the only reason we are gathered here,” said Yujan Rajbhandari, a 24-year-old student, speaking to AFP. “We are protesting against corruption that has been institutionalized in Nepal.” Another protester, 20-year-old Ikshama Tumrok, decried the government’s “authoritarian attitude,” vowing that her generation would demand change.

The movement has drawn comparisons to youth-led protests in Southeast Asia, with hashtags like #NepoBabies trending online to highlight the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ families, allegedly funded by corrupt practices. Demonstrators accused leaders of siphoning public funds to provide luxurious lives for their children abroad while ordinary Nepalis struggle economically. Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a prominent figure who rose to power through online campaigning, publicly supported the protests, amplifying their message.

    Government Defends Ban, Faces Backlash

Prime Minister Oli, addressing a convention of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) on Sunday, defended the ban as a matter of “national dignity” and dismissed concerns about job losses. “I hear of a planned ‘Gen Z rebellion.’ We are not against platforms or social networks, we are against lawlessness, arrogance, and belittling our country,” Oli said, claiming that social media companies had ignored Nepal’s laws for over a year.

However, the government’s stance has drawn sharp criticism. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called the ban “a dangerous precedent for press freedom,” urging its immediate reversal. The Rastriya Swatantra Party and even members of Oli’s own coalition criticized the move as anti-democratic. The Federation of Nepali Journalists staged protests, carrying placards with slogans like “#NoBan” and “The People’s Voice Cannot Be Silenced.”

    Economic and Social Impacts

The social media ban has already caused significant economic disruption. Nepal’s telecom providers, including Ncell, warned of severe revenue losses, estimating a Rs5 billion hit based on the nine-month TikTok ban in 2023. Small businesses, which rely heavily on platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp, have shifted to TikTok and Viber, but many fear long-term losses. The ban also threatens Nepal’s tourism industry and the ability of migrant workers to communicate with families, raising concerns about its broader societal impact.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.

But at the same time, the guys are in a good place, they are playing well, and they are playing for each other, which is more important than anything else.” He emphasized the need for clinical execution, adding, “The hardest part was getting here, and now we need to just play the match and not the occasion, but you need to think about tomorrow. You need to be clinical.”

India’s journey included topping Pool A with victories over China (4-3), Japan (3-2), and Kazakhstan (15-0), followed by a 2-2 draw against South Korea and a 4-1 win over Malaysia in the Super 4s. Their commanding performance against China secured their final berth.

  • Saudi Arabia: Mandatory Approval Required for Travelers Carrying Medications

Riyadh, August 30, 2025 – The Saudi government has introduced new regulations requiring travelers to Saudi Arabia to obtain prior approval from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) for carrying medications, particularly controlled substances like painkillers, sleeping pills, or psychiatric drugs. Applications must be submitted through the SFDA’s Controlled Drugs System (CDS) portal at https://cds.sfda.gov.sa, designed to facilitate legal transport of medications and prevent delays at entry ports.

    Steps to Obtain Approval:

    1. Account Creation: Register a personal account on the CDS portal (https://cds.sfda.gov.sa).
    2. Application Submission: Provide personal details, travel information, and specifics of the medications.
    3. Document Upload: Submit a valid medical prescription, a doctor’s medical report, and an identity document (passport or resident ID).
    4. Medication Details: Declare the medication’s name, composition, administration method (tablet/injection), quantity, and packaging size.
    5. Medical Verification: Confirm the medication is for personal or family use only.
    6. Agree to Terms: Accept SFDA regulations before submitting the application.
    7. Track Application: Monitor the application status online to check approval or rejection.
    8. Approval Letter: Download and print the approval letter to carry during travel.

The new system eliminates the need for in-person visits to authorities, offering a 24/7 accessible portal for convenience and time savings. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s efforts to streamline processes for travelers while ensuring compliance with drug regulations, similar to UAE’s medication import rules (Web ID: 23).

Critical Note: The regulations enhance traveler convenience but require strict adherence to avoid legal issues. Lack of clarity on processing times or specific restricted medications could pose challenges. Travelers must verify the SFDA’s list of controlled substances and apply well in advance to ensure smooth entry.

    FAQs:

    • Is a prescription enough? No, approval via the CDS portal is mandatory for all medications.
    • Where to apply? Exclusively through the CDS platform (https://cds.sfda.gov.sa).
    • Can I apply for someone else? Yes, with their medical documentation.
    • How to check application status? Track directly on the CDS portal.
    • What after approval? Download and carry a printed approval letter.
