  • WhatsApp Android App Gets GIF Search, Media Sharing Limit Increased to 30 Files

WhatsApp rolled out support for GIF images in its iPhone app in Novemver last year starting, followed by the Android app a month later.

Now, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp has expanded the feature by integrating a GIF search keyboard into the messaging app with the WhatsApp for Android beta version. Alongside this, the WhatsApp beta has also increased the number of media files that can be shared at a time from 10 to 30 files.

The new WhatsApp beta v2.17.6 for Android has introduced a new feature that allows users to search for GIF images directly from the app, and use them in chat conversations. It can be found on the web and use it in chat conversations seamlessly.

A new GIF icon now appears at the bottom when you tap on the emoji button.

Opening the GIF section on WhatsApp throws a lot of popular GIF sharing options available on Giphy (as seen above). You can even search for related GIFs using keywords, select the one you like, and send to WhatsApp users without leaving the app even once. Notably, not all WhatsApp users are seeing Giphy as the GIF image search integration – one of our team for example, is seeing the TENOR GIF search (seen below) instead – possibly because he uses that GIF keyboard on Facebook Messenger. Uninstalling Facebook Messenger did not cause WhatsApp to throw up the Giphy option instead.

  • Russian military plane crashes in Black Sea near Sochi

A Russian military plane with 92 people on board has crashed into the Black Sea, Russia’s defence ministry says.
The plane disappeared from radar 20 minutes after taking off from the resort of Sochi at 05:20 (02:20 GMT). Fragments have now been found.
The defence ministry said the Tu-154 was carrying service personnel, members of the famed Alexandrov military band, and reporters.
The plane was flying to the Syrian province of Latakia.
The flight originated in Moscow and had landed at Adler airport in Sochi for refuelling.
The defence ministry said in a statement: “Fragments of the Tu-154 plane of the Russian defence ministry were found 1.5km (one mile) from the Black Sea coast of the city of Sochi at a depth of 50 to 70 metres.”
So far no survivors have been found, local rescuers told the Interfax news agency.
Most of the passengers were Alexandrov Ensemble members, reports said, along with nine journalists and eight crew members.
Reports in the area said flying conditions were favourable. An investigation has been launched to determine whether any violations of air transport safety regulations had taken place.
Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said the plane was carrying passengers to a New Year’s performance for Russian troops deployed in Syria.
