    ‘For past 2 week Chennai and cuddalor district was brutally affected by heavy rain and flood. From On that time now till POPULAR FRONT OF INDIA involve in all stage of rescue , relief and rehabilitation work. Now I show the few reports on our works(till Dec 10) Totally 4,500 volunteers works on this project. We rescue 5000 peoples from the flood. 2,16,157 peoples get our service from flood. Total expenditure in the flood relief work by Popular Front Of India is Rs.1,22,94,155 Till now the relief work of Popular Front is held continuously. In this time I extend my supplication to almighty to give his mercy and grace for those peoples works in the field and people who help us in the relief work’. J.   • 2013 Hyderabad blasts: NIA court convicts Yasin Bhatkal, 4 others

    Hyderabad: The NIA court on Tuesday convicted five terrorists of the Indian Mujahideen, including Yasin Bhatkal in the 2013 Hyderabad blasts case in Dilsukhnagar. The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on December 19.
    This is the first time that a verdict has been handed down against an Indian Mujahideen terrorist.
    Investigations and trials are proceeding in about half a dozen other cases involving Yasin Bhatkal.
    At least 17 people were killed and more than 130 others injured in the twin blasts in Dilsukhnagar on February 21, 2013. The court had examined over 157 witnesses in the case.
    During the probe, Yasin Bhatkal was picked up by the NIA on the Indo-Nepal border along with Asadullah on August 29, 2013. Tehseen and Zia were arrested six months later.
    The NIA claimed that Asadullah, Zia and Tehseen conducted a recce of the city and decided to target Dilsukhnagar because it was a predominantly Hindu area.
    The NIA said the accused carried out the blasts under instruction from their top boss Riyaz Bhatkal, who is in Pakistan.

  • Not taken any step to cancel Axis Bank licence: RBI

    The Reserve Bank on Monday said it has “not initiated any action” to cancel Axis Bank’s licence following allegations of irregularities at some of its branches after the demonetisation of high value notes last month. “The Reserve Bank clarifies that it has not initiated any action to cancel the banking licence of Axis Bank in the wake of certain allegations about some serious irregularities in transactions relating to deposit/exchange of Specified Bank Notes in a few branches of the bank,” said the notification.



    The clarification comes amid rumours in a segment of the media that the bank was likely to lose its banking licence, RBI stated further.
    Refuting the reports in a clarification to BSE, Axis Bank said: “We strongly deny the contents of the said article and we reiterate that the Bank has strong systems and controls as per the norms prescribed by RBI.”
    It added: “We firmly believe that said news is intended to spread panic amongst the general public, demoralise the staff and damage the reputation of the Bank.
    “We take this opportunity to assure customers/investors/ members of the public that the bank has a strong code of conduct with zero tolerance to any deviations from prescribed processes. We are committed to adhering to the highest standards of governance in all aspects our business and to provide the best services to our valued customers.”
    Axis Bank said that this is “without prejudice to our rights and contentions in the matter and to take appropriate measures to counter the irresponsible and mala fide report published by the said newspaper, as advised.” Stock of Axis Bank closed 2.56 per cent down at Rs 444.60 on BSE.

  • Cyclone Vardah leaves behind a trail of destruction in Chennai, claims seven lives

    CHENNAI: Severe cyclonic storm Vardah pounded Chennai at an unprecedented 140kmph for a good 90 minutes on Monday afternoon until it crossed the city and travelled inland+ , bringing at least 10cm rainfall and claiming seven lives.

    The worst is over, said weathermen, forecasting light to moderate rainfall in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Villupuram districts in the next 24 hours.

    By evening, the wind speed had reduced to 15-25kmph.

    At least seven people, including a 3-year-old child and four women died in separate rain-related incidents in the city. The deceased have been identified as Parvathi, 85, of Nungambakkam, Karna Behra, 24, of Elephant Gate, Karthik, 3, of Vadapalani, Vaikuntanathan, 42, of Kolathur, Mani, 60, of Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Radha, 75, of Purasawalkam and Amanullah, 45, of Pallikaranai.

    Weathermen had forecast that the very severe cyclonic storm Vardah would weaken before making landfall. Skymet Weather chief meteorologist Mahesh Palawat said, “Vardah did not weaken significantly as expected. The very severe cyclonic storm was still a severe cyclonic storm when it made landfall north of Chennai.”

    The cyclone which tore into the city brought down hundreds of trees . One half of most arterial roads were blocked with fallen trees, forcing two-way traffic to be diverted to the other half.

    Several houses were destroyed, especially in coastal parts like Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Foreshore Estate and Royapuram. Several incidents of wall collapse were reported across the city.

    Most parts of the city suffered power cuts after electrical poles and cables were damaged. TNEB officials said that it would take at least a day is restore power in several areas. It damaged lampposts in several parts of the city.

    Mobile phone towers collapsed in several parts of the city including Besant Nagar, K K Nagar, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Adambakkam and Marina.

    Rainfall will subside by Tuesday night, forecast weathermen. With about 16cm rainfall since Sunday evening, the rainfall deficit has reduced from 80% to 75%. The city has received 20cm rainfall, against the normal of 80cm.

    Weathermen said that another system might form over the southeast Bay of Bengal in a week or so. Palawat said, “A system could form around December 20. We will have to wait and watch if it can bring the water-starved city enough rainwater to last the summer ahead.”

  • Shirva Church Statue vandalized – One person arrested

    Udupi : In regard to the vandalizing the Statue of St. Anthony at Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva Police arrested one person as per the sources.

    The arrested person named Benedict D’souza aged about 57 years said to be a native of Udupi, but residing near the Society at Shirva who driver by profession.
    An alcoholic man his prayers not answered by St. Anthony, wanted to change the statue’s location to other place while the statue fell down.

    His wife and daughter in abroad and he said whatever he prays not getting in his favours. He wanted to change the position of the location of the statue, as per the sources.
