  • Bhatkal: SDPI Protests ‘Unscientific’ NH-66 Construction After Fatal Accidents

Bhatkal, August 27, 2025 – The Bhatkal unit of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) staged a protest on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, near Noor Masjid, condemning IRB Infrastructure’s “unscientific” and negligent work on the four-laning of National Highway 66 (NH-66). The demonstrators accused the contractor and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) of failing to install essential safety features like streetlights, pedestrian crossings, barricades, and warning signs, resulting in multiple accidents, including the fatal incident involving Murdeshwar resident Ishwar Naik on August 22, 2025.

SDPI submitted a memorandum to the Bhatkal Tahsildar, addressed to the Assistant Commissioner and copied to senior state officials, including the Governor, demanding immediate action against IRB, an independent probe into safety violations, and stricter oversight of highway projects statewide. SDPI district president Taufiq Beary highlighted the decade-long delay in the NH-66 project, stalled for the past 18 months, and issued a 10-day ultimatum for resuming work and implementing safety measures, threatening escalated protests if ignored.

The protesters initially demanded that the Assistant Commissioner or Tahsildar receive the memorandum at the site, but when officials did not appear, they marched to the Taluka Administration Office. The demonstration saw participation from SDPI leaders, including district secretary Waseem Manegar, district council member Zainuddin, assembly secretary Saqib, and others like Suhail and Abdul Sami.

Following the protest, Bhatkal Tahsildar Nagendr Kolashetty inspected the hazardous stretch near Noor Masjid and assured that repair work would begin soon. Circle Police Inspector Divakar, PSI Naveen, and other officers, supervised by DySP Mahesh, ensured order during the event.

  • Udupi: Udupi Sahabalve Demands Action Against MLA Yashpal Suvarna for Threatening Remarks

Udupi, August 26, 2025 – The Udupi-based Sahabalve organization has strongly condemned Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna for his conduct, alleging he exceeded his constitutional responsibilities as an elected representative. In a statement, Sahabalve’s Chief Coordinator K. Phaniraj demanded immediate action from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker, citing Suvarna’s inflammatory remarks made on August 24, 2025, against YouTuber Sameer M.D. Suvarna reportedly said in a media interaction, “If Sameer had come to Udupi, we would have played football with him at Malpe Beach. No matter the government, we won’t spare him without teaching a lesson,” statements Sahabalve described as “terror-inducing” and unbecoming of a legislator.

Sahabalve argued that elected representatives take an oath to uphold the Constitution, and any behavior contrary to this, such as Suvarna’s alleged rowdy-like threats, renders them unfit for office. The organization highlighted Suvarna’s history of actions that disrupt social harmony, claiming his latest remarks insulted the Constitution and the people of Udupi. Such behavior, they stated, is a criminal offense in a constitutional democracy, particularly from someone in a constitutional position, and is “unforgivable.” They urged the Speaker to exercise supreme authority to impose punitive measures, potentially including disqualification, to set a precedent against such conduct.

  • DK Shivakumar Apologizes for Mentioning RSS Song in Assembly, Clarifies Congress Loyalty

Bengaluru, August 26, 2025 – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President DK Shivakumar issued an apology during a press conference today for referencing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) song “Namaste Sada Vatsale” in the Vidhan Sabha, which sparked criticism from Congress leaders, including BK Hariprasad, who demanded an apology for invoking an RSS-associated song.

Addressing the media, Shivakumar clarified, “I was born a Congressman and will die a Congressman. Those questioning my loyalty are fools.” He explained that his mention of the RSS song was a rhetorical jab at opposition leader R. Ashoka to demonstrate familiarity with RSS ideology, not an endorsement. “I was pulling their leg, nothing more,” he said, emphasizing his adherence to Vidhan Sabha decorum and his long-standing Congress roots from his student activism days. As an MA Political Science graduate, he noted studying various ideologies, including those of the RSS, BJP, Communist parties, and Muslim League, and even attended a Muslim League meeting, admiring their discipline.

Shivakumar expressed regret if his words hurt anyone, stating, “If my remarks caused pain to anyone, including BK Hariprasad, I apologize. I’m ready to seek forgiveness from all.” He clarified that neither the Congress high command nor anyone else had questioned him, urging the matter be closed. He reiterated his commitment to his “dharma” while respecting all religions—Hindu, Muslim, Christian—and placing the highest value on humanism. “The relationship between me and Congress is like that of a devotee and God,” he added.
