  • Divya Deshmukh Makes History as First Indian Woman to Win Chess World Cup

Baku, July 28, 2025: In a landmark achievement for Indian chess, 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh became the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025, defeating compatriot Koneru Humpy in an all-Indian final. The Nagpur-born prodigy clinched the title with a 1.5–0.5 victory in the rapid tie-breaks, capping a stunning performance in Baku.

The classical games over the weekend ended in gripping draws, with both players displaying top-tier skill. In Saturday’s opener, Divya, playing white, gained an edge but allowed Humpy to level the score late. Sunday’s second game saw Divya navigate a self-inflicted scare, as she noted, “I wandered into trouble for no apparent reason,” before securing a draw.

The rapid tie-breaks proved decisive. After a drawn first game, Humpy, a two-time World Rapid Champion and world No. 5 in classical chess, faltered under time pressure in the second, handing Divya the opportunity to seal the victory with precise play. The win not only crowned Divya the 2025 Women’s World Cup champion but also marked her as India’s 88th Grandmaster and the fourth Indian woman to achieve the title.

“It was fate,” Divya said, visibly moved. “I came here hoping for a Grandmaster norm, and now I’m a Grandmaster and the champion.”

Divya’s triumph defied expectations. Ranked No. 18 in classical, No. 22 in rapid, and No. 18 in blitz on the FIDE women’s list, she was the underdog against Humpy, a seasoned veteran. This victory adds to Divya’s meteoric rise, following her 2024 World Junior Championship win and individual gold at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where she helped India secure team gold.

Divya’s historic feat cements her as a rising star and a beacon for Indian chess on the global stage.

  • Mangaluru Student’s 170-Hour Bharatanatyam Marathon Earns World Record Glory

Mangaluru, July 28, 2025: In an extraordinary display of endurance, artistry, and devotion, Remona Evette Pereira, a student of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), has secured her place in the Golden Book of World Records by performing Bharatanatyam non-stop for 170 hours over seven consecutive days.

The historic achievement was formally recognized on July 28 during a felicitation ceremony at St Aloysius, where Dr. Manish Vishnoei, Asia Head of the Golden Book of World Records, presented Remona with the prestigious honor. “Bharatanatyam is not just movement but an expression of profound emotion through the body,” Dr. Vishnoei said. “When Remona proposed this, I suggested a five-day performance, but her resolve to dance for seven days—10,200 minutes with minimal rest—was unimaginable. Her perseverance and divine grace set a new benchmark, surpassing the previous record of 127 hours.”

Remona began her marathon at the Robert Sequeira Hall on July 21, continuing until the afternoon of July 28. She was allowed a 15-minute break every three hours, supported by a team of medical interns monitoring her vitals and a simple diet of fruits, dry fruits, and light meals. Despite minor headaches and fatigue, her determination never wavered. She broke the previous record, set by 16-year-old Sudhir Jagpat from Latur in 2023 for 127 hours, on the evening of July 26 and pressed on to complete her seven-day goal.

University and Community Celebrate a Historic Feat

Dr. Praveen Martis, Vice Chancellor of St Aloysius, hailed the achievement as a proud moment for the university. “Two years ago, Remona shared her vision with me. Last year, we consulted the Golden Book to assess its feasibility. This wasn’t just physical endurance—it was a spiritual tribute to Bharatanatyam’s depth,” he said. Recalling a key moment, he added, “When she crossed 127 hours, I asked if she wanted to stop. With quiet resolve, she said she’d finish what she started—and she did, with remarkable grace.”

Fr. Melwin Pinto, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions, described the performance as a meditative act. “This wasn’t just dance—it was a state of meditation. To perform for days with minimal sleep is beyond comprehension. ‘Congratulations’ feels inadequate for what she’s achieved.”

    A Community Effort and a Mentor’s Pride

Remona’s journey was bolstered by unwavering support from her mentor, Dr. Vidya Muralidharan of Saurabha Natyalaya, who has trained her for 13 years. “Remona dances with her heart,” Dr. Vidya said. “This record is a revival of Bharatanatyam’s elegance for the younger generation.” To sustain the marathon, Dr. Vidya curated a three-hour audio set of Bharatanatyam compositions in various Dravidian languages, strategically repeated to match the performance’s duration.

Sujan, a member of the Horizon Dance Team, recounted the emotional experience of supporting Remona. “The first two days were quiet, but soon the hall was packed, even at midnight. Her parents, teachers, and friends gave her immense strength. We believed in her completely.”

    A Cultural Triumph

The felicitation ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including MLC Ivan D’Souza, Remona’s mother Gladis Celine, and fellow artistes who witnessed the week-long performance. What Remona has accomplished transcends a personal milestone—it is a cultural beacon. In an era where traditional art forms compete with digital distractions, her seven-day dance marathon stands as a testament to discipline, resilience, and the timeless beauty of Indian classical dance. For those who watched, it was not just a record but a profound revelation.

Baku, Azerbaijan, July 25, 2025: Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has become the first Indian to reach the FIDE Women’s World Cup final, setting the stage for a historic all-Indian showdown against 19-year-old prodigy Divya Deshmukh. This milestone ensures the prestigious World Cup trophy will come to India for the first time since the tournament began.

Humpy secured her final berth with a dramatic 5-3 tie-break victory over China’s Lei Tingjie, overcoming a deficit in rapid tie-breaks with a commanding blitz performance. Her resilience earned praise from chess legend Viswanathan Anand, who lauded her “exemplary spirit.” Meanwhile, Deshmukh, in a sensational run, defeated top players including China’s Zhu Jiner, India’s Harika Dronavalli, and former World Champion Tan Zhongyi in the semifinals, earning her first Grandmaster norm.

    A Generational Showdown

The final pits Humpy, a veteran and reigning World Rapid Champion, against Deshmukh, a rising star whose bold and dynamic style has captivated the chess world. This year, she stunned World No. 1 Hou Yifan at the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships and defeated three top-10 women at the World Cup, showcasing tactical brilliance and composure.

    India’s Chess Renaissance

This all-Indian final underscores India’s emergence as a chess powerhouse, with consistent Olympiad medals and a growing roster of female stars like Vaishali Rameshbabu and Gukesh D. Support from institutions like GM R B Ramesh’s Chess Gurukul and Anand’s academy has fueled this transformation, creating a robust pipeline of talent challenging global norms.

  • Karnataka Revises SSLC and II PU Exam Rules for 2025–26 Academic Year

Bengaluru, July 25, 2025: The Karnataka government has unveiled draft rules proposing a revised evaluation pattern for SSLC and II PU examinations, effective from the 2025–26 academic year. Announced on Thursday, the changes lower the pass mark and integrate internal assessments into the final scores, aligning with national board practices.

For SSLC exams, the pass mark is reduced to 33% of the total marks, down from 35%. Students can achieve this by combining internal assessment and external examination scores, requiring a minimum of 206 out of 625 marks, with at least 30% in each subject. The total marks include 125 for the first language and 100 for other subjects, a structure unchanged from previous norms. Previously, the pass criterion was 35% with no combined average or specific total mark requirement, focusing only on 30% per subject.

For II PU, the pass threshold is also lowered to 33% of aggregate marks across all subjects, down from 35%, with a mandatory 30% in each subject, now including written exams, internal assessments, or practicals. In subjects without practicals, students need at least 24 out of 80 marks in the written exam, while those with practical components must score at least 21 out of 70 in theory. The practical exam format shifts from 30 to 20 marks, with an additional 10 marks awarded for meeting criteria such as 75% attendance, completed practicals, a certified record book, and exam appearance.

These amendments, part of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board First Regulations (Amendment) 2025, aim to address historically low pass percentages—62% for SSLC (5.28 lakh passed out of 8.68 lakh) and 69.16% for II PUC-1 (out of 6.37 lakh)—partly due to the absence of internal marks and a higher threshold. Objections or suggestions can be submitted to the Chairman, Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, 3rd floor, 6th cross, Malleshwaram, Bengaluru-560003, within 15 days from July 24, 2025.
