  • At least 5 candidates in BJP's 2nd list have tainted past

The names that have raised eyebrows are Katta Subramanya Naidu and Krishnaiah Setty who were jailed in land scams but acquitted later. Setty, who will contest from Malur, was BJP’s chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa’s companion in jail as he was a co-accused in a multi-crore land scam in 2011. On the other hand, Katta Subramanya Naidu, who has been given ticket from Shivajinagar constituency, was jailed on charges of a land scam involving his firm Itasca in 2011.

BJP’s second list of candidates for the Karnataka Assembly Elections on May 12 contains at least five names with a tainted past. The list, comprising 82 names, has candidates, who were acquitted in corruption, forgery, cheating and rape cases. At least two of them had spent quite some time in jail on charges of cheating and forgery.

The charges against Naidu were that as a minister, he knew about an industrial project of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Authority near Kempegowda International Airport and tried to make a windfall gain by entering into an agreement with the land losers. Though the BJP national president Amit Shah denied any relationship with mining baron G Janardhana Reddy, the party gave a ticket to his brother G Somashekhara Reddy to fight from Ballari city.
He was an accused in the cash for bail scam to get his jailed brother mining baron Janardhana Reddy released on bail. Somashekhara Reddy was accused of trying to bribe a judge. The party gave a ticket to Haratalu Halappa to contest from Sagar constituency. He has been acquitted in a rape case.

He was accused of raping his friend’s wife in Shivamogga in 2009. The court dismissed the case for want of evidence.
MP Renukacharya, who will fight the electoral battle from Honnalli, was accused of sexually harassing a nurse when he was a minister in Yeddyurappa’s ministry. The minister later said the nurse withdrew cases against him.

  • Namoshi's supporters protest over BJP ticket distribution

Following the release of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) second list of candidates for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections, former party MLC Shashil Namoshi’s supporters staged a protest as he was not given a ticket.

Addressing the press, Namoshi said, “I have been working for the party for a long time and was shocked to hear that my name is not there, I don’t know what happened but it has hurt me.”
Overwhelmed, the BJP leader broke down halfway through the presser and had to be escorted out by his supporters.
Karnataka will go to polls on May 12 to elect its representatives for the 225-member assembly. The results will be out on May 15.
With the release of the second list, the party has declared the names of 154 candidates.
  • BJP manifesto for Karnataka polls will have 'path-breaking' declarations, says state party leader Muralidhar Rao

Bengaluru: BJP general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Muralidhar Rao, on Monday said the party’s manifesto would have “path-breaking” declarations, and hinted at it having ideas regarding Kannada and culture.
    Representational Image

He also indicated that there might be a mention about the party’s ideas with regard to not subjecting mutts and temples to any kind of government control or “intimidation.”
“There is people’s involvement in manifesto preparation and definitely on four, five issues we will have path-breaking declarations from the party when we come out (with the manifesto),” Rao said.
He was speaking at the “Meet the Press” organised by the Press Club of Bengaluru and Reporters Guild.
He listed out a comprehensive resolution of farmers’ issues, “radical” welfare declarations and programmes among the priorities.
Rao said “Karnataka, Kannada and culture, also tourism are inseparable. BJP as a party rooted in cultural aspect feels it has to be a powerful asset in solving issues, so there will be path-breaking ideas from us in this regard.”
He accused the Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi of “half-hearted” temple visits and called them “election Hindus”, Rao said.
“BJP will have a completely different view. Not just visiting temples and mutts, but ultimately these mutts and temples should not be subjected to government control, harassment, threats and intimidation…..,” he said.
He referred to the Siddaramaiah government’s move to seek public opinion about bringing mutts and temples under its control which was later withdrawn following protests.
“If they (Congress) come again they will do it again. BJP will take a dynamically different view; so mutts and temples and on issues related to culture BJP will have things differently,” Rao said.
The state assembly polls would be a “watershed election”, and a “very important one,” he said.
It was not just crucial in the context of the state, but in the context of BJP’s onward march, he said.
Rao said the party was charged up and motivated to “expose” the failures of the Congress.
“… in Karnataka the ground is ready. Both perception wise and feedback from the ground level there is large-scale anti-incumbency against the Congress government,” he said.
For the BJP, anti-incumbency or the failures of the government and its performance would be the central subject, he added.
Rao said Siddaramaiah and the Congress had got “jittery” and started deviating from issues on realising their performance was not up to mark.
“Whether it is Kannada or state flag or Mahadayi or Lingayat issue, all these are issues on which he (Siddaramaiah) has woken up after four-and-half years…,” the BJP leader said.
For a party that has ruled Karnataka for so long, talking about Kannada, state flag or Lingayat now, would not add credibility to it, he said.
Rao said BJP was completely focussed on “exposing” the Congress government on its performance and would not allow it to “side step” or create a “non-issue.”
Adding to the Congress’ performance, “lack of unity among its leadership and failure to motivate its cadres has added to party’s misery,” he said.

BS Yeddyurappa to contest from Shikaripura

The party has still not announced the name of its candidate from Udupi against Congress candidate Pramod Madhwaraj, though it is almost certain that the ticket may go to former BJP MLA Raghupati Bhat. The BJP has not named its candidate from Kaup either, where Congress has fielded sitting MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake. It has however announced in its list that Sukumar Shetty will contest from Byndoor.

The saffron party, which is striving to return to power in Karnataka after a gap of five years, has announced Yeddyurappa as its chief ministerial candidate, with a target of winning 150 out of 224 assembly seats.

The Congress, too, had announced its first list of 218 candidates on Sunday for the state assembly polls.

Meanwhile, Janata Dal Secular has already announced candidates for 126 constituencies. The party is in alliance with Bahujan Samaj Party for Karnataka Polls
With polling day inching closer, Karnataka has turned into a political battleground with both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP extensively campaigning across the state.

  • Income Tax raid on Congress MLA and candidate in K'taka Assembly polls, B Shivanna

According to preliminary reports, the MLA’s office and residences were raided by I-T sleuths.

Sitting Congress MLA B Shivanna from Anekal (Bengaluru Urban) constituency who is set to contest the May 12 polls from the same seat was raided by Income Tax sleuths on Monday.
There has been no official confirmation from the I-T Department yet on the findings.
The raid comes incidentally a day after the ruling Congress announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming elections.  The MLA could not be reached for a comment.
According to preliminary reports, the MLA’s office and residences were raided by I-T sleuths.
In March, Congress MLC Raghu Achar had also faced raids by the I-T Department.  MLC Raghu is known to be a close aide of KPCC President G Parameshwara.
The Congress in the state has maintained that the BJP-ruled centre was misusing central agencies to carry out political vendetta.
It all started with raids carried out by the I-T Department in properties across the country owned by Energy Minister DK Shivakumar and his associates.
The raids became contentious due to its timing.
The raids were in August, 2017 just after Shivakumar was credited with keeping a flock of Congress MLAs from Gujarat in a resort to stop them from being poached by BJP ahead of Rajya Sabha polls.
Minister Sivakumar who is incidentally the richest among state ministers had secured bail in March with regards to the I-T Department cases against him.
I-T Department said that they had conducted the raids based on torn notes found on Shivakumar which suggested crores of rupees of unaccounted transactions at the Eagleton resort where the Gujarat MLAs were housed.
The I-T officials had claimed that the raids had nothing to do with the Gujarat Rajya Sabha polls but rather a continuation of ongoing investigations.
