  • ATM Cash Withdrawal Limit Raised From Rs. 4,500 To Rs. 10,000 A Day, Says Reserve Bank

    HIGHLIGHTS

    1. Cash withdrawal limit increased to Rs. 10,000 per day starting tomorrow
    2. Weekly withdrawal limit of Rs. 24,000 per bank account remains unchanged
    3. Weekly withdrawal amount for current accounts doubled to Rs. 1 lakh.

Starting tomorrow, you can pull out 10,000 per day from an ATM, though a weekly limit of 24,000 per bank account remains unchanged.

The RBI has increased the daily limit for ATM withdrawals from Rs. 4,500 which has been in place for a few weeks now.

From current accounts, the amount that can be collected each week has been doubled to a lakh.

Limits of access to cash were declared on November 8 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the shock announcement that 500- and 1,000- rupee notes would be illegal just a few hours later.

The demonetisation drive, he said, would check tax evasion, corruption and counterfeiting.

A huge cash crunch followed, driving millions of Indians into long lines at banks, and the PM in an emotional speech asked for “just 50 days” till December 30 to resolve problems.

After the new year, the scarcity of notes has eased up, though the opposition has said the government has defaulted on its PM because cash restrictions remain in place and, according to most estimates, virtually all the banned notes have been deposited in banks, meaning that black money has not been destroyed or forced out.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has pointed to improved tax collections to dismiss reports of economic disruption after the notes ban.

The shock decision on abolishing high-denomination notes prompted most private economists to slash growth forecasts to 6.3-6.4 per cent for the fiscal year 2016/17 from over 7.5 per cent, citing the impact of the demonetisation, which they said would linger for one more year, but the government has called those concerns unfounded.

The Finance Ministry’s Statistics Office has predicted strong economic growth in the current fiscal year that ends in March. Gross Domestic Product is estimated to expand by an annual 7.1 per cent in the current fiscal year, slower than a provisional growth of 7.6 per cent in 2015/16. But the forecast does not fully take into account the impact of the notes ban.

On Friday, Urjit Patel, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has been summoned by a parliamentary committee to explain how the demonetisation decision was taken as also to outline its impact.

In a written answer ahead of his appearance, the central bank has stated that it was the government which “advised” that 500 and 1,000-rupee notes be removed from circulation, which was then cleared by the RBI the next day.

The PM announced demonetisation just 24 hours after that.

The RBI has been criticised for following the government’s lead on a landmark decision on currency and for taking a backseat in the days that followed, with Mr Patel missing from briefings that made important announcements on issues like cash limits.

  • WhatsApp Android App Gets GIF Search, Media Sharing Limit Increased to 30 Files

WhatsApp rolled out support for GIF images in its iPhone app in Novemver last year starting, followed by the Android app a month later.

Now, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp has expanded the feature by integrating a GIF search keyboard into the messaging app with the WhatsApp for Android beta version. Alongside this, the WhatsApp beta has also increased the number of media files that can be shared at a time from 10 to 30 files.

The new WhatsApp beta v2.17.6 for Android has introduced a new feature that allows users to search for GIF images directly from the app, and use them in chat conversations. It can be found on the web and use it in chat conversations seamlessly.

A new GIF icon now appears at the bottom when you tap on the emoji button.

Opening the GIF section on WhatsApp throws a lot of popular GIF sharing options available on Giphy (as seen above). You can even search for related GIFs using keywords, select the one you like, and send to WhatsApp users without leaving the app even once. Notably, not all WhatsApp users are seeing Giphy as the GIF image search integration – one of our team for example, is seeing the TENOR GIF search (seen below) instead – possibly because he uses that GIF keyboard on Facebook Messenger. Uninstalling Facebook Messenger did not cause WhatsApp to throw up the Giphy option instead.

  • Indigo and SpiceJet flights avert collision at Delhi airport

NEW DELHI: A major accident was averted at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport on Tuesday morning as two planes, an IndiGo and a SpiceJet aircraft, came face-to-face on the runway.

According to the reports, there was a miscommunication with the Air Traffic Control.

The IndiGo flight had arrived from Lucknow and was moving towards the taxiway while the SpiceJet flight was about to take off.

“An Indigo flight 6C-729 which was coming from Lucknow to Delhi with 176 passengers on board, post landing on the taxi way saw a SpiceJet aircraft in front of it,” Indigo spokesperson Ajay Jesra said.

“The incident occurred on Tuesday morning and the matter has been reported to Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA),” Jesra said.

Meanwhile, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered probe into the incident.

This is the second airport runway fiasco reported this morning.

In Goa, a Jet Airways flight skidded and took a 360-degree spin on the runway just before take-off. Some passengers were reportedly injured while being moved out of the plane on emergency slides.

  • Mumbai-bound Jet Airways flight skids off Goa airport runway, 12 hurt

A Mumbai-bound Jet Airways flight carrying more than 150 passengers skidded off the airstrip at Goa’s Dabolim airport during take-off on Tuesday.

Twelve fliers were hurt after jumping off the inflated escape chutes used for emergency evacuation, said sources. There were no serious injuries.
Jet Airways issued a statement confirming that its Goa-to-Mumbai flight (9W 2374) carrying 154 passengers and seven crew members veered off the runway while aligning for take-off at 4.30am.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has begun an inspection, news agency ANI said in a tweet. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will investigate the incident, ANI added.

  • CBSE for making Class X board exams mandatory

Board exams for Class X are set to become compulsory for all CBSE students from 2018 as CBSE’s governing body on “unanimously approved” a proposal in this regard.

At the meeting of the CBSE governing body, its members agreed that from the academic session 2017-18, compulsory board exams should be introduced for all students of Class X, sources told PTI in New Delhi.

The decision will now have to be approved by the government before it is implemented.

Currently, it is optional for CBSE students to choose either the board exam or a school-based examination.

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has in the past favoured making board exam compulsory for CBSE students as is the practice in all State boards.

The sources said while there is a view that for the Class X Board exams, 80 per cent weightage will be given to the marks scored in examinations while 20 per cent weightage will be given to school-based evaluation.

In another key decision, the CBSE has decided to recommend to the HRD Ministry that the three-language formula, under which Hindi, English and modern Indian language are taught, should be extended to class IX and X as well from the current VI to VIII, a source said.

Officials added that the board also favoured sending a recommendation to the Centre that those languages which are listed in schedule VIII of the Constitution should be taught under the three-language formula while languages which are “purely foreign” should be taught as a “fourth language as an elective subject”.

In the past the HRD Ministry-run Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) used to offer German as a third language, but the practice was later discontinued.

The final call on these decisions will be taken by the government, a senior official said.

  • Email With Tip Offs About Black Money, Says Government

NEW DELHI: Have information about black money? Email the government at blackmoneyinfo@incometax.gov.in , Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia told reporters today. He also announced a new scheme that gives three more months to those who have black or untaxed money to declare their wealth even after December.

“No one should think that just because they have deposited the money in banks, it becomes white,” Mr Adhia said.

While December 30 is the last day to deposit 500 and 1,000 rupee notes banned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, people can come clean about black money under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY).

The scheme offers 50 per cent tax and penalty on the declaration of unaccounted deposits in banks. Those who declare their wealth under this scheme will also have to park a quarter of the sum in a non-interest deposit for four years.

“Unaccounted cash can be disclosed under the scheme starting tomorrow till 31st March,” Mr Adhia said, adding that the scheme is not amnesty but the last window to “move out of the black money system”.

Since the notes ban, around 316 crores has been seized in multiple raids by taxmen and around 80 crores was in brand new currency, said the official.

Those with illegal wealth have a common modus operandi, he said, which includes deposits in multiple accounts, misusing Jan Dhan zero-deposit accounts for the poor and setting up fake companies.

“Everyone should remember that black deposits are being watched,” Mr Adhia said, commenting that the idea is not to create an Inspector Raj but people “should realize that the department has information on people’s deposits.

Those who tried to deposit large amounts in multiple deposits are under scrutiny, he said, assuring “non-intrusive methods”.
